Smooth Newts are Ireland’s only native newt and they are found in a range of habitats throughout the country.
A Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) assessment can be undertaken any time of the year to ascertain the suitability of a habitat to support these newts. However, it is optimal to undertake it during April to May as it better reflects the habitat newts will come to at the start of the breeding season.
